 About Us

July 3, 2009

Outlaw Stud is located on our property just outside Sale in Victoria, Australia. We raise Hereford Cattle for the Australian Beef industry. In addition we keep a small flock of Wiltshire Horned, Dorper and Dorper Cross Sheep specifically to train dogs with. The Kelpies and Border Collies are an integral part of everyday life on the property and are used daily. Because we muster in large paddocks our Kelpies must be able to cast a great distance and tend to be what is described as a “paddock” rather than a “yard” type of Kelpie.

The stud is home to some very old bloodlines of Kelpie that are becoming hard to find in Australia. The source of this blood is from dogs  that were shipped to the United States in the 1970’s and not diluted and only recently shipped back to Australia. It includes some early Karrawarra dogs, Scanlon dogs and Elfinvale dogs. Extended pedigrees can be obtained from us by request but are also listed briefly on the pages about the dogs. Recently we have introduced some Riana blood as well to the stud. Because of the many genetic problems to plague the Kelpie for which there is no DNA tests available we have severely curtailed breeding of Kelpies to be sold as breeding animals. As our goals are to only breed genetically sound animals we have made this decision for the betterment of the breed. We do have dogs within the stud that we are confident do not carry genetic problems but breeding of these animals will be limited. (See section on genetic problems in Kelpies) We do however have de-sexed animals available from time to time which are trained to work livestock or very occasionally suitable for pet homes.

In addition we have imported two top Working Border Collies from Northern Ireland. More information on these dogs can be found on the Border Collie Sire page. These dogs with the addition of imported semen on some of the worlds top working Border Collie sires are forming the foundations of a breeding program based on ISDS registered, genetically sound , high work drive Border Collies. Occasionally pups from these bloodlines will be for sale.

Both the Kelpies and Border Collies are sold under a Breeder’s Terms contract. This contract protects the buyer and us as the Breeder and is clearly written with the best interest and welfare of the dog in mind. WE NO LONGER SELL ANY DOG WITHOUT A WRITTEN CONTRACT. A copy of the contract can be e-mailed to serious buyers on request.

All dogs are fed a high quality dry food and a version of the BARF (Bones and Raw Food) Diet. This includes raw chicken, raw beef and lamb, bones and an assortment of vegetables, fruit and vitamins. We believe that raw food is an important part of a healthy canine diet. We make our own BARF food from locally sourced meat, vegies and fruit. Dogs are routinely vaccinated, wormed and kept on heartworm preventative. We keep all dogs in individual kennel runs and do not chain our dogs.

Our Kelpies are registered with the WKC - Working Kelpie Council of Australia, and are tattooed and micro-chipped as well. They are crate broke; Ute broke, broke to tie and handled three times a day. Pups are well socialised and exposed to stock from an early age.

All Border Collies are registered with the International Sheepdog Society (ISDS) and DNA tested for CEA, CL and TNS. All breeding stock is hip x-rayed for Canine Hip Dysplasia. These dogs are all micro chipped as well. They are crate broke; Ute broke, broke to tie and handled three times a day. Pups are well socialised and exposed to stock from an early age.

We also run inbreeding co-efficient factors and homozygosity percentages on all dogs and prospective breedings. We feel that this is another tool in setting working traits and allowing us to better understand where other traits may be coming from. We welcome any inquiries and questions with regards to the computer program which we use to run this data.

Photo © Australiankelpie.comIt is the standard policy of Outlaw Stud to not sell Working Kelpies or Working Border Collies to pet or agility homes. We have found that the high drive breeding of these dogs will not suit the average backyard pet owner. Too many Working Dogs end up in shelters or dumped because they were sold to the wrong home. You can find a breeder to sell you a Working Kelpie or Collie as a pet, but they will not want to know you once the pup becomes destructive or aggressive due to lack of work on livestock. OCCASIONALLY we will have a dog or bitch that shows no interest in stock and is suitable to be sold as a pet. If available they are posted under the Kelpies For Sale or Border Collies For Sale section.

It is also the belief of Outlaw Stud that not all Kelpies and Border Collies are suitable to be bred. We often have trained and started dogs for sale that are sold as neutered or spayed animals. These dogs are sound but for one reason or another they would not be outstanding sires or dams. If you are looking for a good working dog and are not interested in breeding or specific bloodlines, perhaps one of these would suit your needs.

Breeding animals are dogs or bitches that we would consider breeding to ourselves. These dogs will be more expensive, but are usually sold to someone looking for specific lines. We are extremely concerned with the genetic problems in the Working Kelpie and Border Collie and are making every effort to screen dogs for these conditions with the limited resources available. All pups and grown dogs are sold micro-chipped and currently wormed and vaccinated. All dogs are also sold under a written contract pertaining to that particular animal.

If you are interested in a working pup, dog or bitch from Outlaw Stud please Contact Us and we will let you know if we have anything available to suit your needs.
