Genetic Disorders in Kelpies
Although
the Australian Kelpie is a relatively sound breed in comparison with
regards to genetic faults, it is not without its problems. Three of the
main hereditary conditions to affect the Kelpie are Hip Dysplasia, late
developing PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) and Cerebellar Abiotrophy;
also known as CA or ataxia. Hip Dysplasia can be diagnosed with x-rays
and is multi-faceted in the way it is inherited. PRA can be diagnosed by
eye exams when it appears, but at present there is no DNA test to
determine carrier or affected status in individuals.
